Hey, I am pretty new to having axolotyls, I have had two for about 3 months and at the moment they are in a 50 Litre tank which is more than enough space for them but I have had issues with high ammonia even though I change the water regularly and have started adding a product thats meant to neutralise the ammonia. It was suggested that I get them a bigger tank, which I will do in a couple of months time, but till then I need to find a way to keep the ammonia down!! Any advice?

Since you're doing frequent water changes, unless your tap water is adding the ammonia then you're getting it from left over food or axie waste. Your tank is quite small so you'll need to stay on top of this situation. Are you using a filter to help with the removal and break down of axie waste? What are you feeding your animals? Do you remove all left over food?

How large are the axolotls? 50L is not large enough for adults..so I hope yours are juveniles.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
