Hi. I have a 9month old female black axi called Gem. Her home doesn't consist of much at the moment, due to some bad advice from a local aquarium :( I've got her in a 2 foot tank, with a log (which she loves to hide in) and 2 plants. I'm going to see if i can get something for the bottom of her tank today, because the sand I used to have in it was terrible (no thanks to a certain lady at a certain aquarium). Anyway, it's nice to find a place with so much advice for my little friend

Welcome to the forum! I started out with an unsuitable tank due to bad advice but soon sorted it out after hanging around here for a while!

The sand I had was blue and it wouldn't settle and it was obvious that Gem didnt like it either. So, I got her some large pebbles yesterday, some more plants and some rocks for her to sit on. She's much happier now, although I'm abit worried about her tail, she could b stressed. I think she needs to be fed something that wriggles, because I've been feeding her the axolotl tablets, which she's been eating very well, but everyone likes a treat now and again.

Wiggly food is always good I reckon! Worms are considered the best axolotl food, I'm waiting on my worm farm arriving, never thought I'd be excited about worms... But there you go!

Shame about the blue sand, but if it wasn't working you did the right thing taking it out. Not sure about the pebbles, how big are they? Are they MUCH bigger than her head? And bearing in mind she could grow quite quickly... If they are as big as her head or smaller, theres a very real chance they will end up in her belly. Also, food and grime can get stuck down between pebbles and make it a pain to clean, so make sure you are very vigilant with the cleaning, or perhaps try some regular sand?

Wassup with her tail? If you can get some pics, pop them up in the sick axolotl forum and let everyone have a look, it might be something folks have seen before and can give you pointers if needed :)

Ok, the pebbles are bigger then her head, as far as i can see, she likes the plants and the pebbles and the rock I put in there :D I went to my local aquarium and asked about some worms and the guy gave me these tiny frozen fish and said that they're good to cut in half right down the middle and wiggle in front of her. The problem is, she so far hasn't taken any notice of my attempts to feed her these bits of tiny fish. I'm thinking of going back to the store for the worms. I will try and take a pic or 2 soon and post em asap.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
