Hey im new to this thread and i'm considering getting a small axie (2 inches). Just wondering if it was ok to have guppies as tankmates to reproduce as a food source for my axie. or will they nip at the axies gills and cause problems? I thought it might work out since they occupy different areas of the tank

I would hold off on adding the guppies until your axolotl is a larger size. Once it gets bigger then it should be OK as long as you quarantined the guppies first before adding them to the tank.

im assuming im waiting for them to be larger so the guppies wont pick on the axies?

Right, axolotl gills at that size look especially tasty to a fish.

thanks for the help. i should be getting the axies in the mail today! i have one more question, what size should the substrate be (like a number, at most 2mm for ex) for the small 2 inch axie?

Don't use any substrate for larvae. It's just easier to clean up and monitor feeding without a substrate.

i'd just like 2 add that when yr axie gets bigger it WILL eat ALL the fish, even the adults.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
