Hi,

I am doing a thesis paper on the pigmentation genetics of axolotl and am in need of some breeding records in addition to my own. I cant think of a better of more diverse place than here to obtain them.

I am specifically looking for breeding records for a (golden) albino cross leucistic breeding pair over 2 or more generations

if you have had a goldie and leucistic breed and then allowed the offspring to breed it would be an immense help if you could tell me the phenotypes(colours) and approximate number of each colour variety in each generation

Any and all help is appreciated

Thanks,

Ollie

Expect some quite surprising results because unlike Mendel your first crosses will not always be inbred and the axolotls may carry single copies of recessive mutations.

If the golden does not carry the leucistic and the leucistic does not carry albino then all the first generation should be wild type and a second generation cross should produce a classic 9:3:3:1 ratio of wild type, golden albino,leucistic, and white albino.

Your first generation cross may end up very different, you could have half leucistic half wild. Half albino half wild. Three quarters wild, one quarter melanoid. These results respectively tell you the albino carries a single copy of the leucistic gene, the leucistic carries a single copy of the albino gene or both carry a copy of the melanoid gene. Other genes like axanthic may add further complications and if you are inbreeding it is possible other recessive genes will become apparent!

Thankyou all for the helpful advice and tips, it is much appreciated;
however I am at the stage in my paper where i am only in need of some hard evidence to support the claims that have been made (e.g. the generational distribution that you have just described.) I am really just looking for records or approximate recountings of your past breeding experiences.

Thanks,

    with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

    Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

    Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
