hi ive had both my axies for about 3years and they have always been together,
but latley the one keeps chasing the other one all around the tank, any ideas why
thanks

Do you have a male and a female?

im not sure what they are, but they have always got on fine until now

If either (or both) of them are male, it could be a breeding behavior.

how can i tell what sex they are do you have any idea
thanks

Hey, it's really easy to tell gender in sexually mature adults. Take a look at this link Axolotls - Biology If you still need help post some pictures of the cloacal region and we'll help you

This sounds like a case of breeding behavior to me too. Getting along for 3 years then all the sudden someones in the mood. ;)

Something similiar happend to me when gold was introduced into the tank.

My Axies have just started doing this too, they have been together since they were in the pet shop and in the last few days seem to follow each other round and round the tank, not so much of a chase but they do seem to play hide and seek in and out of their little houses and plant pots - think they might just be very playful.
I think i definitely have 1 male but not sure on the other axie yet and can't get any decent pics either

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
