I'm a biology nut, or some such thing. I've raised a bunch of various grasshopper species, mantids, butterflies, betas, sea monkey, etc.

This recent Christmas: Dec 25 2010, a friend of mine gave me some sort of either tiger salamander or axotl. (since they bought it from a guy at a mall, and then the stand disappeared, I have NO idea what it is. Pics will be forthcoming. lol)

So, I'm trying to broaden my knowledge so I don't kill or hurt my buddy, Smaug (yes, after the Lord of the Rings dragon)

Hello, Liz!

What a spectacularly bizarre situation! I guess soon enough we'll all find out, haha!

Anyway, I was a newbie not so long ago, so welcome to the ranks ^_^ Looking forward to find out how your little buddy shapes up!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
