My name is Mabel and I've had two axolotls (which I refer to and think of as underwater dragon babies gifted to the ancient Mayans by aliens) since July '10. One is a white albino (Ragged Robin) and the other is a wildtype (alternates between Lord Fanny/King Mob). I was under the impression they were same sex and incapable of reproducing, but, lo and behold, their tank has been filling with eggs for the past few days and I'm not trying to connect with the community more to decide my next steps.

Hi Mabel, and welcome to the forum
I LOVE your description of axolotls....:D
Feel free to browse the forum and ask any questions

(PS. If ever I have a "Close Encounter" with an alien, fingers crossed, I'll be sure to ask if those original 'underwater dragon babies' given to the Mayans, were actually 'captive-bred' or 'wild-caught'.Hehe) :alien:

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
