So i'm new to axies but have always wanted one. I have C. orientalis and Italian Alpine newts so I already have some caudate knowledge but have never reared from eggs before and am therefore a bit nervous

A friend from another forum keeps axies and has sent me some eggs and I currently have them in a tank and am eagerly anticipating them hatching.....any advice for a newbie?

since you've never looked after axies you may find this chalnging but since you've got them you might as well have a go at hatching them:eek:
firstly i would keep them in a small plastic container for food like for egzample a take-away plastic container or tuple ware
secondly you may need some equpment such as a peppet (sorry if spelling rong) for feeding and moving your baby axies a tea strainer for water changes and moving axies
thirdly and most imporntantly food axolotl lavae only eat small live food such as dathnia, baby brine shrimp and micro worms i opt for the first option of dathnia since they are the most nutrishus compared to micro worms wich shood be if you have a choise of liove food chosen last baby brine shrimp or bbs are very nutrishus but die more and the babys are what you want not the adults
i have some queshtons how old are the eggs?
how many eggs do you have?
is it the parant axolotls first batch? if so the chances of all of them surviveing are very slim:(
if you want care sheets or want some more info eaver ask me as i am raising my first eggs wich i aqired from this site or search this site fgo to axolotl.org or ask jeangengie 149 for info post pics when they hatch wishing you all the sucses on your first go
and hope ive helped

hi sam,

I have them in a small tank and am doing the daily water changes, I shall take note about the pipette and tea stainer for doing changes.

I think from the pictures on the axylotl site that they are on about day 10 although some are still circles and others look like tiny tadpoles and if you look really closely you can see the beginnings of gills forming and they twitch randomly every now and then. I plan to feed small daphnia and baby brine shrimp rather than the microworms as I have heard before they aren't as good for them as the forementioned.

there are 10 eggs and I think its at least the second lot of eggs from the parents

i think you have a good chance of raising them i would move them to a small container if i where you so when they hatch you can keep track of them it took me a while to gety the lavae out of the tank to a small container it is also good to keep the eggs in a small container because the food is more concentrated remember just ask if you have any queshtons you seem to be on the right track
hope all your eggs hatch

as you can see some of the eggs don't look like they are going to come to anything. Fingers crossed for raising these larvae :)

Looks good,
have you got dathnia in with the lavae?
If not you should try and get some in the next 24hrs

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
