Swarley was repeatedly taking in water like axolotls do when they eat, but repeatedly with no food in the tank. One right after another like when we hiccup. I ran and got a camera but she stopped. I only managed to get it on camera once, and it just looks like when she eats but misguided to a bubble or something. Should I be worried?

What are your water parameters and did you add anything to your tank like salt or diff temp water a few minutes prior to seeing this behaviour? I heard salt usually causes that kinda reflex.

Luckily, this behavior never repeated. I know that I never added anything to the tank that was unusual. However, I currently have some bad roommates with no way to isolate her tank. I have no idea if they dropped anything in there, accidentally or otherwise. I have no idea what they are capable of either, the joys of a random dorm roommate lol. One more week! Then I alone control all variables lol.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
