My axie has spent the last day or so floating, and I honestly have no idea why.

I don't think he is constipated because he is in a bare bottomed tank and he is fed on earthworm and bloodworm, and he poops fairly regularly.

he is fairly young and I am aware that younger axies can float but I don't think this is the issue, and he seems to be gasping for air even though there is a air powered sponge filter in the tank and a airstone.

I am completely stumped as to why he is acting this way as I have never seen him float so much for as long as I have had him.

he is currently in the fridge because we are experiencing some hot weather he is still floating at the top, and he is eating, but not as much, and I do suspect he is floating because he has been gasping for air, and he may have swallowed some, and if this is the case, how do I get him to "burp" it up?

water chemistry in the tank and the containers in the fridge checks out. the tank is about 23 degrees but as above, he is on holiday in the fridge.

any ideas?

Is his in fairly shallow water in the fridge, so he can tuoch the bottom? It'll probably do him a lot of good in the fridge for a spell, but I don't know about the floating thing...is he still eating ok?

ok just a update on the status of my aixe.

he is out f the fridge now and back in his tank, and he is still floating, and once again I have no idea why and I am convinced something could be wrong because this is not normal behavior for my axie.

all the water chemistry and temperature all checks out.

I'm getting worried now that something is wrong because I feel I'm doing everything correct.

I can upload some pictures if need be.

Photos or even video would be good!

Is he just kinda hanging there? Swimming around too?

Could be something wrong, but he might just fancy a float around for a bit! I've experienced that with one of mine, was beside myself cause it was so out of character. How long's he been doing it for?

my aixe has just made a liar out of me, he is now floating mid water?

I'm completely stumped.

Hahaha, little pest. Is he hanging off one of those plants?

It might just be the picture, but he looks very much on the skinny side. Did you say he's not been eating well?

So is he back in his tank? Is it still at 23? He might be at the top because the oxygen is better there? Is he still 'gasping'?

I don't know what to suggest other than the fact the tank is warm (but you said he was doing it in the fridge) and the fact he does look so skinny.

It may literally just be that he fancies a bit of a float for a while, like i say, Chester did it last week and it was so out of character, but I'm kinda getting used to the fact they are pretty bonkers, as far as pets go!

the tank is at 18 degrees now, I have a 10L spring water bottle in the fridge filled with treated axie water that I top the tank up with.

I am starting to think he could be constipated as he seems to be floating tail end up, and I offered food and he wont eat now.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
