I cant get the levels right!! its frustrating .. what to do!?

Hi,

I cannot seem to get my tank water levels correct. I just got the water tested again and they are:

PH: 6.6
Ammonia: 1.5
Nitrite: .5
Nitrate: 0 (but it starting to rise).

This testing is better than what it was a week ago. How do i make everything correct? including get the ammonia to 0?

My little axie has been happily in there ... but now since yesterday i find him randomly floating at the top of the tank . but yet, he still has his appetite!

water changes, it gets really really really annoying, but its the only thing you can do. I've been doing daily waterchanges for months now, and I'm hoping I'm just about done. Your at least halfway done, so your not too far off having a fully cycled tank. Try to keep the ammonia level below .25. That can be pretty hard depending on how large of a tank you have, but definatly keep it below 1 ppm.

Axolotls are very simple creatures. Adding complex devices like filters (or lights, gravel, "toys" or other unnecessary objects) to their simple existence makes things way more complicated than they should. The best way to avoid this is to keep them in a tank or tub with no filter and do large water changes weekly or as needed. Spot cleaning is a great way to eliminate the need for frequent large volume water changes, though partial water changes weekly or every other week will still be needed. Using a turkey baster to remove fecal matter takes a whole 5-10 seconds, I know that sounds like a bit much, but trust me, that little effort goes a long way!

    with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

    Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

    Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
