Ok here we go again, poor Jabba does not have much luck!

I have been treating my wild Jabba for the last 2 weeks as she mysteriously lost a couple of toes and a couple of tips of her toes plus a bit of her tail, now this was not a feeding issue as all 3 of mine are hand fed and they also all get along

After speaking to one of the moderators it appears her axie also used to have this problem so it seems Jabba is prone to things happening to her unlike my other 2!

Anyway I treated her for 2 weeks with tea baths in nice cold clean dechlorinated water out in my cold conservatory and after a while her feet were not red and the skin healed up so back she went in the tank with the other 2. Now since then I had noticed one\ of her gills had got a lot shorter but also in less than a week I have noticed the whole of her left hand side gills are visibly a lot shorter, so does anyone have any ideas as to why this would happen?? Have lured her out with some pellets so I can attach some piccies to show this.

Thanks as usual for your help :D

Hi Zoe

Sorry to hear about poor Jabba... I was going to say that my own axi's gills are shorter on one side but it isn't nearly as dramatic as Jabba's. Plus mine had always been that way. Sorry I couldn't help! Hope s/he will get better soon! S/he's a really cutie!!!

Poor Jabba! Could they have been nibbled?

One of Chesters gills has gone mysteriously missing, i'm assuming Roscoe is to blame. It doesn't look bad, or sore, or bleeding, it's just not there!

Hi Zoe,

I'm with Mewsie, they look to have been nipped. If it were any sort of health issue the ones on the other side wouldn't be looking so fluffy and long. Accidents do happen even among friends. I keep three sisters together and every now and then, I see a tip of a gill missing and such. Goofy little critters, see something moving and the "snap" just happens automatically.

Hope she gets along okay! :D

Hi Shannon & Mewsie,

Oh blimey ok well thats probably the best outcome (poor Jabba) just weird as it is every gill on the left hand side so quite bizarre and just did not think that would be a cause but maybe it is.

We do get the ocassional tail nip dont get me wrong but never seen gills before :( well fingers crossed they grow back soon and thanks for your help guys xxx :D

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
