I just got two adult axolotls and was wondering if they were melanoid or wild type. I thought they were both wild type but then i noticed that one of them has eyes that look almost amber or orange and the other one has more "normal" looking eyes. I read that non-melanoids have a shiny ring around their pupils, is that the amber color i see? And since the other one does not have that do i have a melanoid and a wild type?

The amber very well could be the shiny ring - it's usually a gold colour. Good luck capturing it on camera, but photos would be very helpful.

Oh! And you are right that wild-types tend to have the shiny patches and melanoids don't :)

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
