Hi. Over the last two hours (while amusing my 5 year-old son with images of "weird creatures" on the Internet, I've become a potentially rabid Axolotl fan. Knowing that these creatures are critically endangered in their native Mexico, I would hesitate to buy from unscrupulous dealers, but can anyone point me in the director of a breeder/supplier/collector in South Africa? I'd appreciate this. Regards, Mags

Hehe, that's what happened to me, too!

Sorry I can't help you with dealers near you, you could post a wanted ad in the wanted forum, perhaps someone will see it on here :)

Big welcome to the forum!

Welcome to the forum, Maggie.

I wouldn't worry too much about 'unscrupulous' dealers. I've never seen a legitimately wild axolotl, and I doubt many of us ever will. They're so easily bred in captivity, there's no reason to pillage their natural population (if you could even find one in the wild!).

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
