Hi. I joined this site after acquiring my first tiger salamander. she is wild caught but has adjusted well and has become part of the family, well, to my brother and I at least. Mom does not really enjoy her company. Anyway, graduating high school soon and will be attending MTSU. Unfortunately they don't allow pets except for fish so Sammi will have to be cared for by my little brother... may God bless her soul. So what I could find about the whole fish accepted thing in dorms was it has to live in a full water aquarium, have a filter, and easy to feed.... like any other fish. This has led me to become very interested in axolotls. I think they are amazing and perhaps I could get around the rules. :D It is awesome to have this opportunity to learn from fellow amphibian owners. It has helped a lot in the keeping and maintenance of Sammi.

Well, they do call them "Mexican Walking Fish".

I know at Michigan State, they saw no difference between anything aquatic: fish, salamanders, turtles, etc.

Welcome to the forum!

I should hope you'd be ok!

We aren't allowed pets either, and were a bit worried about the axies. Our landlord recently came to do a flat inspection and didn't even think twice about the HUGE TANKs in the kitchen, even though three hungry little axolotl faces were looking out at him!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
