Hi... I saw these two marks on my axi today... could they be bruises? He's been very active over the past few nights. Its a dodgy photo... they are actually a little darker than they appear in the pic.

Oh the water parametres are all fine
ammonia 0
nitrite 0
nitrate 10
temp 19
pH 7.0

Also one side of his gills are slightly smaller than the other... is that normal?

Looks like he's banged himself up against something! Is his skin broken at all?

Could have been his log... I'm trying to grow Java moss on it so its softer. No broken skin and I've been watching him carefully

Im no expert but I think just keeping a watchful eye is the best thing for the moment. Especially if he's fine otherwise. Fingers crossed its nothing

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
