So I finally got my fresh water test kit today, I got all excited and used it straight away. I tested for ammonia first, following the instructions to a T. Came up as 0 ppm. Then I did my nitrate, once again, followed the instructions to a T. The water turned to a perfect... clear.... no colour what so ever in that tube... Then it was time for the nitrite. The instructions in the book said add 10 drops of both, on bottle #2 it said add five drops  went with the book and that has turned a beautiful pale emerald green... I currently look like this --> any clues? I followed all the instructions fully, even down to the timings so not quite sure where I went wrong with it...

Got my mum to double check and did everything the book said :/ Might have another go in a bit, wash them out fully

If you have a local aquarium or pet store, they will often test your water..so if you have conflicting results they would be able to confirm one or the other.

I rinsed the tubes out thoroughly and tested again, got readable results the second time, not sure what I did but cracked it now :D

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
