Hi New to this informative site, I have been keeping cynops orientalis for approx 8 years. i have only two in a 3 foot by 1 foot tank, I use gravel and an undergravel fileter with a pump that needs replacing.
I know i can make my terrarium better and i am looking at an upgrade . same size but with a proper cabinate. also a new pump and deeper water (currently approx 5 inches) hoping to put more smooth stones in it rather than the huge bank of gravel i have at present. all salamanders are healthy looking. although my main question is about breeding. Mine every year or 2 years lay eggs. If they lay eggs does that mean i have a male and female. theyve laid eggs in the last year. never had anything else introduced to tank, both salamanders are from same retailer at the same time. the retailer had a **** set up and i felt sorry for them. one is larger one smaller i assume larger is the female but i am hopless at sexing them . i am hoping for you guys to advise. my salamanders seem healthy and have been for some time. but it doesnt mean i cant learn more....

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
