Hello everyone! I am happy to say I am interested in buying two axolotls. I have a twenty gallon tank with fine white sand and one and a half inch rocks in my room. This tank also contains a filter, hiding huts, some decor, and a divider for the axolotls. I have a net, some pellets (I will also buy frozen shrimp and worms) a PH, nitrate, and ammonia testing kit. I also have names Avery - happy gift from God and Sage - wise. The only thing I'm missing is AXOLOTLS!!!! :(

I would Love to have a golden axolotl (Avery) and a spotted melanoid - black (Sage) but no matter what color I will love them just the same! Also, if you think my tank set up sounds wrong please do not hesitate to inform me! I want these axolotls to be as happy, healthy, and comfortable as possible!

Thank you!

Even 1.5" rocks can be a bit of a risk...it seems crazy but if you search the forums you can find x-rays of stones that size being ingested. I hope it is a 20 gallon long, rather than a 20 gallon high! Sounds like you are more than prepared to get your Axolotls, and I hope to see you around the forum!

I don't think I'll be having many rocks then, just in case. I plan on using sand which seems like less of a risk.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
