Hello All :D

I have had my too little Axolotls for about a week and a half now, and I am still trying to find the least traumatic way to clean their tank.

I was curious what seems to work best, and how I can get the tank clean with a minimal amount of stress on my little buddies. I have a medium sized syphon, a separate tank and net to move the little guys (this scares me a bit, Ill be honest), and am willing to go and pick up anything else you guys would suggest.

Any input would be so appreciated  Thanks so much!

I tend to leave my axies in the tank when I clean. Mainly because the one time I moved Alex he kinda slipped, kinda leaped onto the floor and freaked me completely out xD

I use a siphon but I don't like moving it up and down quickly to start the flow so I just suck on the end of it, I move the hides so I can 'vacuum' the sand properly but put them back as soon as I have the water out.

When refilling I just slowly pour the water in so the movement doesn't freak them out and they seem to be fine with that.

I don't remove my Axi's either. I just syphon around them and sometimes give them a little nudge to move if they are sitting on some debris. They don't seem to mind, I'm guessing that they'd get used to you cleaning the tank around them eventually.

My axie stays in her tank, she does not mind at all.

she does however snap at the siphon, and at my fingers, the other day she got hold of my pinky and would not let go.

Same, mine stays in the tank and will often come over and check out what im doing... He's not at all bothered by the process.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
