I have one male axolotl named Charlie, and he is about 1 year old now. I thought it would be nice to introduce Charlie to a new male friend, which I can adopt from someone on the internet. I'm fairly new to axolotl keeping, and I was wondering if I can just introduce a strange axolotl to Charlie. Should I keep the axolotl in a seperate tank in quarantaine to rule out any disease this new axolotl may have and will they fight since they are both male? This axolotl is the same age and size as Charlie. Thanks a lot for the help in advance!

Hi,

you should keep the new axie in quarantine tank for 30 days to clarify if it´s healthy. After this you can keep both in one tank, if your tank is big enough for 2 axies. Axies, even males, aren´t territorial. :D

My current tank is 1 meters in length. Would this be big enough for two axies?

Thanks a lot for the quick replies! :D I will pickup my new axie soon then :D!

Congratulations on your new axolotl!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
