I'm in Melbourne and I'm broken hearted over the recent death of my beautiful axolotl, Spanky.
Spanky went on a hunger strike and no matter what I offered he couldn't be tempted to eat. Unlike his tank mate, Lumos, who would eat my hand off if he could get it in his mouth.
In my search for answers as to what might have been the problem I discovered this site and I'm absolutely delighted with the amount of information available. I know with the help I find here Lumos will live a long and happy life.
I'm also happy to have found others out there who appreciate the unique charm of axolotls. Most people don't have a warm reaction to my pets and can't understand why I'm so attatched to a "fish".

Welcome to the forum! This place is definitely the place to be for any salamander or newt owner, and it's VERY axolotl friendly! I'm so sorry to hear about your loss... It's always hard losing a beloved pet, even when other people see it as a slimy fish. You'll find plenty of people on here who love them as much as you, and plenty of people willing to give you advice and help you out with your remaining axolotl!

Welcome! I wish the best for your other axolotl.

Don't be offended by "some fish" comments, people can be extremely ignorant. No offense to your friends, but the last time I checked fish didn't have four legs.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
