How long to keep babies in small containers

Hey all,

Today I'm getting 2 axie babies. They're about 2 inches and I'm planning to keep them in a smaller container, like a 1 gallon plastic tub or something, until they get a little bigger. Anyway, what I'm wondering is, about what size do you think it would be safe to move them to an actual tank (I have a 10 gallon set up for now, then I'll move them to a 20gL. I'm just worried about feeding the little guys in a bigger tank, as well as them possibly being sucked up by the filter  Or would they be big enough now to go into a bigger tank?

Heather,

I would keep them in the tubs until they're around 4 inches long (that won't take long at all). I wouldn't even bother with a 10 gallon. I would get your 20 long set up, and get it cycled, and then move your axolotls directly into that.

The best way to cycle like this is to just take all the waste water from your 1gal containers and dump it into the 20. Voila! Instant ammonia source!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
