Hey is there any way to enhance my axolotl's gill feathers? or maybe he's just to young, 4 inches or so, it's not that red much, thank you for your answers :)

Only thing you can really do is make sure they are well fed and have optimal water conditions. You'll have to leave the rest up to genetics.

thanks, i was so eager to see them with red feathers :) she so cute :)

Reduce the oxygen in the tank, both my youngsters have massive feathery gills, the more oxygen in the water = less they need their gills so they shrink, less oxygen = gills grow longer to compensate. They have lungs too so if they are too oxygen starved they will go to the surface to breathe :D

will try that, thanks :)

i have one aerator connected to a sponge filter so that the water flows through the whole tank, do you think i used lessen it up? i have an idea to lessen it

drop a regulator on it and limit it slightly, im not saying completely starve them of oxygen just that the less = longer gills, you will find an equilibrium with the perfect oxygen for nice gill length.

thanks will try that :)

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
