What are some viable options to house freshly hatched axolotl larvae? can you just put them in containers, no filtration or what? how big of room should each one have?

I'm not the most experienced baby-keeper, but this is what I'm doing for the 13 I'm raising at the moment (11 are off to different homes, two are staying with me). Filtration if you have a larger tank, just keep the water nice and calm. If not (and this is what I'm using for my baby axies at the moment), then there's a set of 4 BPA free lock containers for $9 available from k-mart. Each set comes with 2 containers perfect for housing blackworms (for when they're off the bbs), a long, low one which you can house them in when you're changing the water, and a nice, larger one which works well as a normal house. You'll need to change the water frequently, and might I also suggest that you put in a bit of java moss for hiding and oxygenation?

I'm certain people with more experience will be chiming in in a second!

You can house them together until some are substantially larger than the others, then they need seperating into size order,

I would start with a tub with some java moss on the bottom and some elodea floating on top ( if your allowed that plant)

Depending on how many you have in a tub they dont need too much space, most of them hardly move all day.

I dont use a filter for my babies, i just clean them out every day or every two days dependant on the ammount of water to axolotls. I also poop scoop when i see any.

I had over 30 freshly hatched larvae in one container, then to make it easier to feed (brine shrimp) and clean, I separated them into two tubs, then as they grew, some faster than others I moved the larger ones into another tub, and so on. I am at 6 tubs at the moment, and I have a spare 6 tubs, which whilst feeding, I half fill them with clean water, then it is easier to transfer the babies over after they have finished eating and pooing. I have a bit of frogbit (plant off ebay) in each tub, and dont have a filter as the plant helps as does the doing the water change twice daily (only because they are fed twice a day.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
