I've just done an upgrade to a 4ft tank a week or so ago.
Up until now I've been relatively sure I've got 2 males and a female.. but it occured to me, Lottie COULD be a boy.. She doesn't look it at all (no enlarged cloaca) but I've had them all for like 3 months, and 4 rounds of sperm packets later, STILL no eggs..

Now I'd come to the conclusion that Lottie was just not yet mature, and the sperm packets were from claiming new territory (because up until now they HAD been consistent with my tank upgrades). But I found a load of sperm packets a week ago when they got their new tank, cleaned them all out, and noticed ANOTHER today!

Any ideas?? I am well and truly STUMPED!

PS. Lottie (be it male OR female) DID have her sexually mature toes for about a week, a month ago (when I brought in the latest male 'Red').. but then they DISAPPEARED! It was almost like she DID like him.. then changed her mind.. is that even POSSIBLE??

If anyone has had a situation like this.. I would LOVE to hear about it..

I guess it just takes time for them to mature! i know its meant to take girls a few months longer than the boys, but its funny she is changing her mind. I think you would be able to tell by this stage if she is a boy as she/he is starting to mature.

If you really want your own eggs (hopefully mine arrive safely today) you could always fit in another female just to be sure? your tank could fit 4-5. You could go buy another adult female from the petstore, just make sure to check gender first.

There's no visible enlargement to indicate that she's male.. maybe she's just a strange little cutie.. :)

Oh and I didn't mean that I didn't want your eggs when I said I wanted Lottie's eggs.. no offence meant. I am VERY happy with your little eggies and will love them as if they were my own! Thanks so much! :)

haha no worries I understood! she defiantly looks like a girl, and what a pretty colour! I haven't seen any wild types around here, all melanoid or golden albino. I would love a wild type like her! so ccuuuuute!!! I have noticed in my melanoid and heard from others that when the axolotl is dark, they gets white toes, instead of a light axie getting dark ones. My dark axie’s toes are definitely white... I thought she had fungus at first. Maybe keep an eye out for white ones too? She could just be a late bloomer... like we all had one of those friends that got boobs really late. Maybe she is just one of those?

Do you have any pics of the sperm sack as I'm new to axolotls and not sure if my male is leaving deposits. The pet shop told me it was mouldy food. It was a jelly like substance with white in it. Thanks

They really love to confuse us. Oh well... it's a long time ago that I've seen those little wiggly jelly volcanoes. (Maybe the ladies are lesbian...)

lesbian axolotls :D

This might sound wierd but how many spermatophores do your males usually produce? Axolotl.org sais they produce between 5-25! my boy only ever produces 1 or 2, even in a large tank. Oh well it still works... quality over quantity i guess.

I've seen 2 in one tank, but the next time I saw like 11.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
