I wanted to drop a line to the forum and introduce myself. I'm a 27 year old mom of two boys, working and going to grad school for economics and public administration. I live in the US and I am a Colorado native.

I have a slight "strange pet" fixation. Between saving to own and breed alpacas (for fleece, as I am also a spinner/knitter/crafter) and perusing Craigslist one day, I saw someone rehoming their leucistic axie and I fell in love with his happy smile and beautiful gills!

I didn't luck into getting the little guy, so I don't currently have any axies (booooo! :(), but I'm in the slightly-obsessed, research and planning phase of getting started. I'll probably be a quiet observer and researcher more than an active participant until I have finally adopted a few. Thanks for providing this kind of a community and resource! It is really beneficial in making me feel better prepared.

Any and all suggestions, resources, tips and hellos are greatly appreciated. Have a good one!

Welcome to the forum!

I'm glad to hear you're doing all your research ahead of time. A well-informed consumer is a happy consumer. A happy consumer has happy axolotls!

My tips? Read all the threads you can, past and present. Before you have axolotls, there's not likely a question you can ask that hasn't already been asked. There are hundreds of threads out there that are full of awesome information.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
