Hello,
new to the forum.

I am working with Tiger Salamanders. Specifically trying to breed them in captivity.
I am planning to chill them down to hibernation temperature for 1 month, wake them up, and place them in warmer water with controled photoperiod. I hope that will triger a breeding response. I have several animals. I plan to house 2 males to one female.
Although I will admit that I am not 100% sure of the sex.

Any comments or advice would be of great value to me.

Also, anyone use any kind of hormones when breeding? I have read seveal papers that suggest injection of hormones or dopamine antagonist may help some frogs, thought maybe it would work in salamanders too.

thanks

Seems like temp and photoperiod are key. I plan to build a hibernaculum and place my animals into simulated hibernation for 30 days along with controling the light cycle.

I have not been able to find out much information on the use of hormones on salamanders. I know they have been known to work well in many frog species. I was hoping someone may have experience with this.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
