I have recently bought some Axolotl eggs. they are about 6 days old. you can just start to see the outline of the aolotl. the eggs are a greeny colour, 'glow in the dark green' is the best way to describe it. the babies father was leucistic (white/pink), and the mother was a golden one.

any help would be appreciated. i don't think they're going to die or anything. am hoping that it means that i will get some golden axies

The first thing that pops up in my mind is: GFP?
But I think it's better to see a picture. :)

I'd guess that whoever sold you the eggs added something to the water to prevent the eggs from getting fungus and this colour has been taken up by the eggs giving them a green colour. If the eggs are developing normally I wouldn't worry about it.

I don't think GFP axolotls are available in NZ.

thanks guys, yea, i was wondering what gfp stood for??? ha ha. best bet i'm guessing is that fungus theory. i bought them off of Trade Me (america's version of ebay, i guess). They didn't say if they had added anything to the water, but i'm not worried about it anymore:) as long as they weren't deliberately harmed, i'm fine. worst case scenario, i could have gotten some strange mutant babies! now THAT'S something to ponder!

you mention that you got them of the 'american ebay.' If you had them posted from america GFP is likely. Unlike here they're not very rare in the states and in relatively common circulation

by the way GFP stands for Green Fluorescent Protein - it makes your axies a little greeny and they glow under UV light

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
