Question about Elodea and Notophthalmus viridescens.

I have the elodea with my newts in a 3 gallon tank. How much elodea should I have? Is there any limit? Like... does it over oxygenate the water or something? They are Notophthalmus viridescens by the way.
 
3 gallons is waaaaay too little. The minimum recommended volume of water for one or a pair of small sized newts is 10 gallons. Anything less is very unstable and insufficient in every way.
You really need to upgrade the newts to a larger tank, with at least 10 gallons, but the more the better.

You can have very thick masses of Elodea. At some points i´ve had tanks literally full of it, with barely a small corner to drop the food in. Newts like dense areas of vegetation. It´s a good oxigenator because it grows fast, but there´s no risk of over-oxygenation or any such thing, don´t worry.
 
Ok. I've had them in it for five years so it hasn't been a problem yet but, I do feel like its time for an upgrade since I added two more recently. Thanks for the help!

    with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

    Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

    Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
