Hi, My Axolotl Lenny has no fluffy red bits coming from his gills. I see lots of other lecustic axies with lovely plumes same as my wildtype Carl. Could this be illness or just the way he is? Eating fine and generally happy. Was hoping they would grow... Any ideas???

Generally an axolotl kept in good conditions ie good water quality and correct temperature will develop "nice" gills, these will vary in size from individual to individual, however some axolotls wont, ive had two who never developed properly, one leucistic didnt develop gills on one side and a wildtype who had stumpy gills, despite the fact that their tank mates had nice feathery ones. I think that both enviromental conditions and genetics play a part.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
