So I have owned African Clawed frogs for over 10 years, and I have always used the waterfall type hang on the back filters with great success. I always fill my tanks to the top, so the waterfall is not harsh. My question is I have read a lot about what types of filters to use with axolotls and I am wondering if many people use the waterfall filters? I do not want to stress out my little man, but I would prefer to use the waterfall filter if I can, the canister filters are quite expensive here! thanks!

You don't need a canister filter for an axolotl. you actually don't need a filter at all and most people use sponge filters. i'm assuming you mean an in tank filter? the only reason i may be against that is the heat the filter may produce.

I had a hang on waterfall type filter on my old tank and had an axie very happily living in it for about a year, found it better than others as it didn't disturb the axie

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
