Hi,

I have a problem with my axy and need some advice.

Today I noticed two White lumps on one of it's sides. One around the rib cage(2-3mm, not quite round in shape) the other at the base of it's tail(1mm,more round in shape). I have no idea what they are or if they need treatment. The best photos I could take are below.

I am new to keeping axys.I have had these pair for 6 weeks,a black one (The Brain) and the White one in question (Pinky).

They are in a 90x30x30 tank.I don't quite fill it to the top. Sand substrate, hang on filter (pointed at glass side to reduce flow),3 small LED lights to keep the plants alive(have chosen tough varieties) with ornament to hide under. I currently change 3/4 a standard bucket a week of water by siphon to suck up poo etc. Check water quality at same time latest results fine (I think) - GH 180, KH 60, nitrates 0.3,ammonia 0.6 at pH 7.2.

Until now no problems, the condition of the gills seems to have improved which I thought was a good sign. They are still both eating well (have been on little frozen fish from the shop I bought them from mainly, with some pellets another shop recommended too), behaving normally,no sign of curled tail or forwardish gills,or other skin problems. Both live together peacefully. No idea what sex, having not seen many before it's hard to judge body shape with little to compare it to!

Have been to the place I bought them from, they were clueless.can anyone help please?

It doesn't look like fungus, but I can't see very clearly.

Is there anything in the tank that might have a sharp edge he could have caught himself on?

Maybe, he/she sometimes swims through the hole at the top of the fake tree stump in the tank I bougth as a hide. The lumps do not appear 'thread like' or 'cotton wool' like, they seem to be on or just beneath the skin.

Being so inexperienced I don't know whether to go ahead with the friding and salt baths or waity and see if it gets worse or goes away by itself.

Do the tank conditions seem ok otherwise? I did try to research well before getting them.

I'd just wait and see. Make sure the water is kept clean and cool. You might want to check the log thing to make sure all the sharp edges are sanded down as axies have quite delicate skin.

Edit: Love the names! Is the wild-type a genius?!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
