Strange behaviour, hiding all day?

Hi,
I'm just wondering if its normal for an axy to hide for long periods? My albi only came out of his hide for about 5 minutes yesterday and again today doesn;t seem to want to leave it. Could this be a sign of stress or illness? I've tested the water and its fine, nothing new has changed around the tank either so I don't understand it. Just a few days ago he was happily doddling about most of the day and has always been like that. I'd love to hear from someone experienced with any ideas or thoughts!

When you say the water "tested fine" what were your actual readings?
What temperature is the tank?

How bright is your tank light? Axolotls are very sensitive to lights because they have no eye lids

Hiding is normal, being mole salamanders they can sometimes be secretive. I wouldn't say this is caused by stress or poor water quality, in fact the exact opposite would happen if that were the case. If you see the axolotl out and about being extremely active, then you should be concerned.

I used to see Canaq (my wildtype girl) out + about in the tank quite a lot, just sitting + chilling, but for the past few months, ever since I got some new hides, she has chosen the most awkard place to be her favourite area + she hardly comes out of it - I take it as a sign that she likes being in there ;) There are other places to hide + rest, but she likes squashing into the top of 1 of the tree stump ornaments (there are 2 in each of my 4ft tanks), but she always choses the same 1, so if it's being enjoyed + appreciated, it was money well spent, LoL!

Thanks peeps, maybe youre right and he's decided he just likes being there! I'm kind of wondering whether he could be constipated or something though as despite eating everyday Im yet to see him poo! Can anyone tell me what an axys poo actually looks like? (sorry gross lol) so I know what I'm looking for and how often they should be going? =o

I still remember when this thread was added :D
It's got photos of an axie having a poo though, so you'll be able to see the end result + guage the size. If not cleared away fairly quickly, poop does disintegrate into the water, so some owners go for ages without seeing any poop. Obviously, it's better if you find it + can remove it, but don't worry too much if you don't - just keep monitoring the water quality + do your weekly partial water changes ;)

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
