Hi guys, i got some new axies yesterday an albino and a green they look to be around 6-7months old. i felt very sorry for them in the pet shop, they were in a very small tank and their feathers had been bitten off! will these grow back? other than that Mork and Mindy have settled in very well and have had a feast of earthworms and bloodworms tonight and they have eaten all!! x

yes, their feathers will grow back :D the feathers are actually their gills. Make sure the tank is kept cold (under 20C, idealy 18C) and the water quality is good. Feed them up on worms and they will grow back in no time.
The green one is called a wild type.

good luck!

Another very important part of their environment is tank substrate.

No gravel or small rocks should be used. Stick with a bare bottom, fine sand or rocks much larger than their head.

Complications due to impaction from ingesting rocks/gravel are very common with axolotls - it can lead to serious problems including death.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
