Hey everybody. I'm sort of kind of new to keeping salamanders. I had one when I was little because I loved them, then I got a saltwater fishtank and that consumed my life. Anybody here with a saltwater tank will knows what I mean.:D However, I am now going off to college and I wanted to still have a fishtank, since I'll be back every weekend, but I don't really want to saddle my parents with my reef. So I'm dismantling the reef and converting it to a freshwater river tank. And then I wondered if it would be possible to combine my love of salamanders with my love of aquariums. The tank's a 55gal, is going to have pretty strong water flow, and it'll be pretty cold, like 65-78 degrees farenheit or so. The decor's going to be mostly rock and a few plants, with pebbles and such as the sediment, with a little sand in spots. The fish will be hillstream loaches, and maybe white cloud minnows or danios, so all super peaceful. If the salamander will work, I can build a bank of some kind into the tank, so it can climb out of the water and rest. I was thinking that Pseudotriton ruber might do well in this setup, but my knowledge of salamanders in general is pretty limited. And, if it turns out that a salamander would be a bad idea, no hard feelings, it was just an idea, lol. So thanks for having me, and I hope to maybe possibly join the ranks of caudata keepers everywhere soon!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
