As I was feeding my axolotl I noticed that his tail was slightly red. I have never seen this before and I am a little concerned. He just had a big growth spurt, and is eating like a freaking pig! He also spun around and acted like he was trying to bite his own tail... what the heck could be going on?

The picture in the middle is not using a flash, it looks darker than it actually is, and the other two pics are slightly washed out... so in reality it's somewhere in between as far as redness lol... dang camera

That's definitely not a pigment thing, although it is quite nicely pigmented.

I would guess that he's constipated or stressed. What's your setup like?

Judy is alone in a 29 gallon tall with no substrate, consistent temps at 65. I do water tests and changes regularly...

The only thing that has changed is I have been feeding him more lately. I have a new axolotl in quarantine for almost 2 weeks I think, I offer the new one worms every night, and it only eats one piece so Judy gets the leftovers.

I did just realize that I have been cross contaminating my turkey baster, using it in both containers....oops. The new axolotl seems healthy.

The redness might be irritation from the increased food, and subsequent digestion.

I would keep an eye on it though.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
