I currently have a very sick axolotl.

We noticed that something was wrong when a white patch appeared on her face last night.

This morning we noticed that it had grown larger.

Our axolotl (named Frankie) has been doing a lot of floating and really appears unwell.

We've made an appointment with a vet for this afternoon, but as the appointment it not for a few hours, we were wondering if there is anything we could do in the meantime?

Thanks in advance.

A picture would be helpful. It could be something as simple as fungus.

Given how warm it is in your part of the world, unless you have a chiller on your tank, the floating and illness can be attributed to heat stress. It's imperative that you keep your axolotl cool (20C or lower), even if it means putting it in the fridge.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
