I have two C. Orientalis and the female will crawl up on land, and then the male will follow and sit on top of her. This has only happened once, but I want to know if this is weird or acceptable.

I think it's acceptable. When they find a nice spot, they all want to sit there.

Sounds perfectly normal to me. I frequently found all four of my C. e. popei piled on top of each other.

Just an add-on question... ever since this happened about 2 hours ago, my female newt hasn't moved at all. The male newt got back into the water, but the female is still in the exact same place and has her body sort of contorted into the corner. The newt is definitely still alive, but is it possible that the male crushed her or anything?

I very much doubt it,. I've seen my FBN stacked 4 high with the most gravid female on top, and there was no damage done to the small male on the bottom.

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
