We (myself, husband & 7 year old daughter) are proud co-dwellers with Rango the Red Eft. He has happily hung out with us in his 10-gallon habitat since July 2011 (6 months now). We want to make sure we continue to provide him with the excellent care he deserves, so we're here to learn more and ask questions.

I've posted an album of pics taken of him over the time we've had him here:
http://www.caudata.org/forum/members/desdemica-albums-rango-red-eft.html.

I hope you can see from these how he has grown. Sorry, the first picture is the most recent and so is out of order--starting at the 2nd pic, they go pretty much chronologically from past to present.

Any comments on how Rango looks to you (healthy/not healthy) would be appreciated, since we are winging it.

Thanks! Des

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
