Hey everybody,

I got three healthy young axolotls about a week ago, (all 3 inch) and they seem to be perfectly happy and full of energy. Only problem is one of them has a bit of skin peeling off its front leg. So far all I can think of is that one of the other axolotls thought the leg was food and had a little nip but I'm not completely sure.
If anybody knows what else it might be and how to combat it I'd be very grateful, thanks to all and am looking forward to hearing what it could be.

It could possibly be from a nibble. But, do you know your water parameters? Such as the levels of ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, ph, and temperature. Axolotls are resilient little creatures but if one of these levels are out of whack it can wreak havoc on your pets eventually.

What size tank are you keeping them in?

Also, supplying a picture for us never hurts :)

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
