Breeding Room

Hello All,

I have nearly completed the breeding room at my work the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust Slimbridge, I have had to do a lot of work but now I have started to move some of the animals in.

This room is for breeding animals for our collection as well as looking at other species husbandry requirements and studying behaviour in captivity. Most of the animals that have moved in so far are our collection of Caudata.

Here are some pictures, hope you like it.

It is still not finished yet so will add more pictures soon as it progresses

That's an impressive room and lovely caudates! What's the size of the enclosures and what species are you currently working with? Thumbs up for a great project!

The enclosures in the pictures house 5 Fire Salamanders each, they are 100cm x 50cm x 50cm.

Hello all,

I have been very busy lately rearing over twenty species of amphibians so it has taken me a while to get round to finishing my breeding pens. So here are some pictures of the development.

Is the water allowed to just soak into the land area there (so the water table is 1-2cm below the soil surface), or is there a waterproof barrier separating the two? I've never tried having land and water areas without a waterproof barrier between them, partly because in my outdoor tanks, the animals need to be able to burrow down 10cm+ to avoid freezing in winter (if they decide to hibernate on land; most of them stay in the water all winter), and it wouldn't work if their burrows were flooded after a couple of cm.

They look really great Jay, good work. Are they in an outhouse of some kind? The fixed units look like they would work well outdoors. Slimbridge is just up the road from me so let us know when they're complete and I might pay a visit!

Dont know how i missed this thread first time round, it looks really good! Is the breeding room open to the public?

Hi Guys,

The building is a converted outdoor storage shed/garage made from a single layer of breeze blocks. It is not open to the public but anyone that has an interest and would like to see it is very welcome to come.

To answer your question Pete the pens water does go into the substrate so they can only dig about 4cm. This is not a problem as the building is fully air-conditioned with the temperature never dropping below 3C and going above 20C

I will let you know when its finished and you are all welcome to come and visit

Hello All,

I have almost completed the second pen which I intend to use for Neurergus species. I still have to add a few plants and things but I am pretty chuffed with it. The water has not settled yet so it is a bit murky but I think its going to be a big hit with my Neurergus strauchii barani who will be the first to test it out.

The first pen I completed is maturing well already so will be putting some smooth newts in soon for a trial.

It's my job so the cleaning comes with it, I don't mind cleaning when I know there is a tank to setup at the end of it.:happy:

Jay I'm super jealous How do i get a job like yours?
Is your work easy to get to V.I.A public transport?
How many species and what are you working with at the moment?
I love your setup's,I do believe I would never see my Wife or kids again If I tried to replicate this lol

Love it!

Well yeah it's a great job, if you have a look at my profile it tells you all the species of Caudata I work with. Yeah there is a train station about 5 minute drive from Slimbidge wetland centre so you could get a taxi, the station is called Cam and Dursley.

You are very welcome to visit.
