Ok so some slightly bizarre happenings from my girl bubbles, since she has laid her eggs (Christmas) she has taken to eating the plants. She gets her worms mix of dendros and lobs. And is still a plump girly, but she has nomed on most of my bacopa plant and keeps chomping down on my java fern as well.

Now I have had them get mouth fulls of plant when chomping for a worm, but these are deliberate chomps at the plants, and sustained till she gets enough that she can actully eat.

Is there a possibility she is lacking in some minerals or something that would make her go for the plants? Or has she just decided she likes salad.

Any thoughts much appreciated

(4ft tank all readings normal. Nil nil 20' temp 18, two inhabitants 12 in male, and her 9in.
Have had the pair about 4years, her about 6 months less)

I have been trying to get some. I just can't work out how to get pictures on here. Am on my I pad, and it's all Greek when it comes to attachments :confused:

Right after mine laid her 500+ eggs, she was incredibly hungry. I noticed that she kept snapping at plants, and I was afraid that she was going to destroy them all. I decided to feed her, and she ate 3 worms in 36 hours (she always refuses food after one worm every other day, but she was begging for more). After that, I upped her feeding schedule for two weeks, and there was no more plant chewing. Your axolotl is probably just very hungry after being exhausted by egg-laying.

I had upped her feeding, and like I say she is a plump girly, but maybe I will have to put her on daily feeds for a while, just kinda woried she will end up like a water elephant rather than an axolotl.

Just wondered if there was some particular minerals she might be lacking. (thinking on pregnant mums and those with newborns that eat cole for the mica).

Thanks for the thoughts though much apreciated

I wonder if she thinks there are eggs still on the leaves. When mine laid eggs they would pick off the eggs and the occasional leaf.
My current tank has an annoying layer of duckweed on the top. I have my filter drip along the top of the tank, my axolotl will position their heads under this and for some reason will try to snap at the water . When they do this they get a mouthful of duckweed, some comes out of the gill slits, but plenty still seems to get consumed. I think just when I start to understand my guys they like to do something bizarre

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
