Hi everyone

I've posted about this issue before, but its now been a month since my axi has eaten. She is incredibly swollen, like her legs cannot touch the ground because he belly is so big. She had a bout of fungus on her gills, which was treated but is now coming back.

As far as I know the parameters are fine, I will check with my sister when I contact her today.

Being so far away from home and not being able to help by baby axi is really hard.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what might be wrong and how to fix it?

Please I hate that she is suffering and I can't do anything.

It may be bloat, but not having pictures makes it hard to confirm. I think your only option is for your sister to take her to the vet .

It could be a number of things. Your sister is better off getting her to a vet.

Ok so my sister managed to get the number of a vet who specializes in reptiles and amphibians near my home... but he's refusing to see my axi because he thinks they are "too complicated"

Are there any cures for bloat?

Wow O_O That is a bit ridiculous and...well, mean. Surely if he specialises in reptiles and amphibians he would at least have some idea on treatments for axies :/

Unfortunately as far as I'm aware there is not a cure for bloat :( there have been cases reported on here and I think the only solutions have been having to drain the axolotls regularly. I might be wrong though, it may depend on the cause of the bloat? Perhaps your sister could call another vet who treats amphibians and at least ask the question. I know there is one in Sydney who treats axolotls, his name is David Vella: David Vella - Exotics Veterinarian, Sydney Australia

People need to remember that bloat is a symptom (techincally called ascites) and not a disease in and of itself. It is an indication that for some reason, the amphibian is having issues with controlling it's osmoregulation with the surrounding water. Liver and kidney damage, infections, and water quality are all known to cause fluid retention.
The fact that it has a fungal infection and is retaining fluids is a strong indicator that there is something significant going on with the axolotl and it's enclosure. RIght off the bat you should consider Holofreter's solution or amphibian ringer's solution ( Caudata Culture Articles: Bloat) or at the very least salt solution see Caudata Culture Articles - Salt Solutions in Treating Salamanders
