I've been looking to meet a few more people. The area I live may as well be Siberia when it comes to social networking.

I've done a few rather unsatisfying searches and came to the conclusion there may not be any meet and greats around where I live and in times when money is tight and meeting new people is harder, there may be a golden opportunity to make things more interesting for any one in an aquatic frame of mind.

This is a shout out to any one in the Northwest of England who fancies putting together an aquatic and herpetology group. If there is already one in existence I'd love to know as i've looked without success.

It'd be a plat form to meet new people share information and the enjoyment of the hobby and I don't see why it would need to have any age limit. In essence it would be an extension of caudata with the addition of those into fish keeping as well (another hobby of mine). Ideally it would begin online as a facebook page so that people can initially get to know who would attend any potential meetings and then we'd arrange to meet up on a weekend at a collectively agreed upon cafe or some such for a chin wag.

I look forward to hearing from anyone in the surrounding area. :D

I live in cheshire, but travel is limited to buses for me, and my time is somewhat limited too, but it sounds like a really good idea - I also think there's not many local people interested in newts

I'm the same limited to busses. Thing is whilst I know no other people Ito newts or even aquariums the fact is I didn't know axolotls were so big until I started looking into them.

If it ends up being a group of 6 mates meeting up for a drink and a chat once a month I can think of worse things lol

I'm in the Northwich area but i've more free time then I want now with work being slow.

I'm from the Blackburn area and I too am limited to public transport.
There are two groups that I know of near me where amphib owners are more than welcome, one in accrington and one in Blackburn, held monthly.
I've yet to go to one as they always clash with work :(

Well ok. I've noticed a few people, North and south have problems with the social groups. Larger cities prioritise the central locations.

There was a thread about setting up a social network for things like babysitting tank mates. Obviously it requires more people to be close enough for an easy transfer. So maybe it's a case of creating a way of seeing how close we are to those interested in meeting up?

I mean what ever template there is for setting up a local met up can be applied to other areas.

I'm not suggesting we should broadcast our exact location if we don't feel like it. But I'm out of my tree bored where I am and there aren't any clubs for anyone interested in herpetology and or aquariums.
Surely there are those who would like to meet up, those interested in either expanding their knowledge or passing what they know on.

It's a fab hobby, we'll all agree that can really make a difference to people's attitudes to the environment and animal welfare. And REALLY fun. So I'm trying to get the ball rolling. Any hints tips or people interested in helping I'm 100% ears.

I'm in the northwich area too!

Ha then we have a start lol. It's rubbish because it's so hard to get to and from places like Chester and Warrington but we live in an are where many people have ponds, per shops are on the up and yet there are no groups to give it a social element.

It's frustrating knowing that there must be enthusiasts in the area, but never actually seeing them. There's a reptile shop and a fish shop in northwich, so there must be people going in there, else they'd close down. Yet I hardly ever get to know enthusiasts

I know! I mean how many fish shops are there? There's a marine specialising in sea horses just down my road and it's ticking over fine.... But who shops there?

I've a few more feelers out to find people but I reckon a meet up for a coffee could be in the pipe line to sort something out. If your interested Angie then consider your self formally invited ... When ever it is... Lol

Were you referring to simply exotics/ simply seahorses? I've been in there twice, and I love the way it reminds me of off-show areas in zoos.
I usually go to the shops on church road for animal related things, the fish shop sells live bloodworms :)

Feel free to drop me a pm or something when you've picked up a few extra people :)

That's the one. Ones on church road is something fishy?

Yeah I'll drop you a line. Keep your ears out for anyone else.

And to anyone else in the knutsford, Sandbach, Chester areas and anywhere near or inbetween we are looking for you...

yep thats the shop, though I spend more time in repti realm

That's my next venture when I have the space and the money. A leopard Geko. Right now I'm happy with all things that splash.
Do you think it's worth Drafting some kind of ad and passing it to Jon in something fishy or the bloke in reptiworld?

Like you said there must be people into the hobby for the shops to tick over so surely a group allowing them to get to know a larger market segment is worth while?

It could be worth a try. If you try in the reptile shop, make sure it's Chris or Ceri that you're speaking to, as they are the owners.
Maybe try the place in anderton too? I've noticed they sell a decent few amphibians

The Anderton place is selling more I've noticed that. I'll be heading into town at some point to begin my quest haha sounds a little more epic then it should.

I have a couple more members or people interested in a place to meet more people interested in aquariums, amphibians and the like.

I'm at a loss if I should aim it at just aquatic or blanket it to exotics? I was just going to aim it to aquatic critters.

I think exotics in general will pull in more people, cast a wider 'net' so to speak

My only reservation Was would the people into reptiles have any interest in aquaria? And vice versa?

Speaking from my self I really want a Gecko and have helped a friend set up for a water dragon before. I am just trying to cover all bases.

Today is my sort out day so i'll have a few more bits and bobs on later.
Thanks for all your help Angie it's really been appreciated. :)

I have found that these interests frequently cross over - take a look at the tank in somethin' fishy, there's a xenopus mixed with the fish, and he used to have some sort of crocodilian in the shop too

My next step is to speak with Jon and the guys at the reptiworld and come up with what they can offer and how they can help.

I apologise for a late response things are hectic here. I'll be starting up in a matter of days I hope and then the real work begins.

Ok so I've gotten together most of the tools I need to start the group but I'm just looking into the legal side.

It's me setting it all up so I don't want anything falling in my head. So the question is age limits, do I have them or do I have proviso's as to who can join. Rules of engagement, I don't want there to be any confusion as to what the aims of the group are and so on.

Basically I don't want anyone being out in an awkward position. Least of all me. I want people to feel relaxed and happy about the group.

I'm trying to hunt down someone who has started a society or group in a similar field but it's hard going.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
