My axolotl hasn't eaten in two months and was floating for a long time. It lives in a clear bottom tank so no risk of impaction or constipation, so looking at advice I put it in the fridge for a couple of weeks. This seemed to help the floating as she doesn't do it all the time now and swims up to the surface taking gulps of air only sometimes.

Because of this I thought it was time to put her back into the main tank which is between 10-20 degrees. However the last couple of days she seems to have contracted a fungal infection white/grey cottony- like lumps on her tail, digits eyes and now her gills. it has spread fast (two days) and i'm afraid she hast got long before they cover all the gills and she drowns.

Looking at advice for fungal infections I have just put her in the fridge again to reduce the fungus spreading and have just given her her first salt bath - 2teaspoons salt/ 2 pints water soaking in overall 6 teaspoons salt/ 6 pints water.

I feel I need to give her a more severe treatment with medication but I likve in the UK and theres not really anywhere specialised for axolotls nearby so no medication I can buy on short notice.

I was under the impression protozin was bad for amphibians.

Anyone have any suggestions? I'm not sure if the floating and not eating for two months has anything to do with this fungal infection- I fear i've caused this by putting her in the fridge originally.

Thanks.

There's a huge difference between 10 and 20 degrees. Does your tank really fluctuate that much in temperature?

Wait and see if the salt baths help before you go throwing more chemicals at her. Keep her in the fridge.

Not eating and floating are signs of illness, not illnesses themselves. Fungus often infects immunocomprompised individuals, so it may be that your axolotl has some underlying problems that are causing all the outward symptoms.

Do you test your water parameters?

The tank is usually about 16-20 with room temperature.

Ive put her in back in the tank at around 13C and have started a pimafix treatment - herbal anti-fungal treatment around 4ml / 50L for 7 days and hope this will help

I have given her multiple salt baths but she seems v stressed out and wriggling at the surface so i think ill stop that for now and see how this treatment goes.

She was in the tank with a mate when this fungal growth spread over her body, the mate seems absolutely fine hes now in another tank but I guess I should treat him too even without symptoms. I know theres somewhat controversy about medications being amphibian friendly but i would have though herbal treatment like pimafix is worth a try? Probably the same as almond leaves?

Pimafix is not on the axie safe medicine list and I am pretty sure it can be toxic to axolotls so you will be doing more harm than good with this!

You need to keep her in the fridge and continue with the salt baths, these will help the fungus!

Please get your axie out of her tank, the pimafix really worries me you have to be so careful with what medicines you use!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
