Our new baby axolotl seems to be spending a lot of times swimming at the top of the tank...not gulping for air or anything just....swimming at the top...is this normal? (he/shes about 8weeks old)...I'm probly worrying for no reason, the only thing is his/her foods(a chopped up blood worm) at the bottom of the tank and s/he doesn't seem too interested...

Mine do that too. I think it's just a young axie thing. Silly lotls :)

Mine have taken to standing at random parts of their tank just on their hind legs. Why? Who knows. They don't seem to have a problem with floating they just want to? That and slide about the plants.

One of my little axys did that for a bit & i would throw food in the tank & it would sink , i would leave & come back a couple hours later the food would be gone & the axy would fat & floating , i say if its hungry it will smell the food & go down to eat , floating stopped after 3 weeks , hopefully ur little guy doesnt have a bacteria or something that doesnt let it sink

oh he can sink for sure...he seems to like to swim down to the bottom, stand on his front legs (hind legs aren't fully developed) and then slowly float to the top...still hasn't eaten though...hes a little smaller then the one in your avatar bigbodybear

now he'll take the cut up blood worm as long as we dangle it in front of him...but he just sucks the gunk out of it then spits it out....has anyone else seen this before?

Since you said his backlegs havent fully grown he might be too small & his sense of smell might not be fully developed for him too find the blood worm , maybe brine shrimp or daphnia might be a better option to go with smaller axy , make sure they are moving infront of him since they attack anything that moves

looking at him now i can see his hind legs but they're tiny and he doesn't really use them yet. Before I got him he was eating blood worms... and he'll take them in his mouth..he just spits the skin back out

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
