I recently purchased 3 chinese fire bellied newts. Larry, Curly, Moe . For the first couple weeks they got along. However Moe the largest started picking on Curly the smallest to the point that I separated them. Since that time Curly hasn't been doing very well. He doesn't eat or move around nearly as much . He has two sores now on his back and a fat lip. The sores look like holes in his skin revealing white flesh beneath. The local pet stores have been unhelpful thus far. Is there's any kind of medication or treatment for this? I've read online that saltwater and or colder temperatures. But how salty and what temperature hasn't been posted. Also Curly still lives with Larry. Should I quarantine them from each other ?.Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hey

I also own FBN. I would seperate them. Put the injured newt in another tank or somethign simialar. For tempreture, normal room tempreture is all thats needed. Keep water clean, so if no filter, tehn chaneg water now and then occasionally along wiht old food. I havent heard of a salt bath before, so maybe someone else will be mroe help to that. I dont know what your feeding them , but i use frozen blodworms so could try that, or earthworms.

Hope this helps and your little fellaw makes a quick recovery :)

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
