Hi everybody! I just wanted to know why sometimes my newts open their mouth once. They open it like once a month or something and the behaviours is LIKE when we open our mouths when we get tired. Thx!

I am not sure to be honest, but maybe they are about to shed and are stretching the skin

That´s definitely a possibility, and if you see an animal yawning repeteadly it´s almost a guarantee of an upcoming shed.
They do it occasionally with no relation to shedding and i would just assume that like in many other animals it´s done to relax and "reposition" jaw muscles.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
