Does anyone know if lead is dangerous to axolotls? Since September when we moved the weekend following the hurricane, we have been having water advisories, boiling water warnings etc...and now there are notices going around our and neighboring towns about high lead content and how to protect yourself....running the water if it has been sitting in the pipes a few hours, not using the hot water for food/cleaning etc etc etc.

Since being at my new house, I and a few others feel that we are having less than happy results with our tanks - - collectively there are a few more deaths than we are comfortable with.

Anyone know how/if lead levels affect the tanks and inhabitants?

Lead affects the nervous system, and is likely universally dangerous to animals as well as people. I'm not certain how tolerant amphibians are of it, but you can likely assume that it is as dangerous to them as it is to you.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
